Are Polish people Catholics? That depends as given the percentage of baptised babies the answer is positive. Also the fact Easter (Wielkanoc) and Christmas (Boże Narodzenie) tradition is rich, and has been followed for centuries, confirms that. But does religion really unite us? Not quite as e.g. we have Boruta and Rokita. Both are devils, but Boruta is supposed to live in Łęczyca castle, wear a sabre and represent the rich and the noble. Rokita, in turn, is for the poor commoners, mostly peasants, and lives in a willow’s hollow. And the word „rokita” is a dialect synonym of a willow, which, by the way, is „wierzba” in Polish. With this comes another aspect as in the country religon mingles with nature and the livestock is given the wafer, called opłatek, as well. It’s, too, supposed to speak human voice on 24 XII, or Wigilia, at midnight. Still, some say you shouldn’t know what the animals say or you may hear when you die. And in everyday life religion is taken with a pinch of salt and humour as in the following short exchanges:
-My husband is an angel!
-Mine’s not a man either.
and
-My wife is an angel!
-And mine is still alive.
As you can see, it’s nothing like The Scarlett Letter or The Sinner with Jessica Biel. Yet, we’re nothing like Latinos as Robert Lewandowski doesn’t have his church and Maradona-like status. This may be due to the fact „Lewy” is #9 but 9 and 10 are not too far away so he may be, again, Polish sportsman of the year soon.
